I think it was BSOD from what you've described, but things usually get
filtered down through about 10 people before it gets to me.  The details
were a bit sketchy, I just remember that it sounded like pulling teeth...
as in your own.  Rumor has it that none of the system administrators wanted
Exchange due to it's problems, but that the administration pushed it.
That's just a rumor of course... :) (read: "big ol disclaimer" ;)
