Text based, my favorite by far is mutt.  http://www.mutt.org

Other options include pine, elm, mush.  And if you're desperate, mail,
Mail, cat, more and vi :)

Graphically you're on your own, though a lot of people do seem to like
netscape.  Dunno if zmail is still around.  You might want to go to
http://www.freshmeat.net and see what they've got in the way of
graphical mailreaders.  It's somewhat Linux-centric, but most of the
packages should be usable on Solaris as well.
