I believe the IBM PS/2 SIMMs have special resistors across normally-unused 
pins, and the value of the resistance tells the CPU (or the chipset, or 
something) the size of the SIMMs.

What resistance, or what pins, I know not, though I have seen the 
information in the far-diatant past.
