First of all, the speakerbox actually contains a serial digital to analog
codec with a fair amount of smarts (a CS4215).  It's only useable with a
DBRI audio equipped machine.

The Classic has the old AMD 7930 audio hardware and cannot use a
speakerbox.  The connector you see on the back is for an AUI ethernet
breakout cable only.  The Classic has conventional audio connectors and
audio is also routed to the internal speaker.

The only Sun systems that can use a speakerbox are the LX (where it
overrides the internal codec) and the SS10 (which has no internal codec).
The other DBRI based system, the SS20, has an internal codec.

You can also use a Speakerbox on the Sun ISDN card to gain another audio
channel, this is handy on a 4/600 for instance.

Last I checked sound support on Linux SPARC was somewhat shaky.  Are you
sure this isn't getting in your way?
