[SunRescue] how to rescue?

A general question...

Do any of you actually contact corporations in the hope of rescuing Sun
equipment that is destined for the dust bin?  If so, how does one go about
doing this?  As a poor college professor, I am not exactly plugged into the
corporate world, and don't even have a clue as to how to start. 

Also, is there any hope of rescuing "newer" old machines, like a Sun 2, 5,
10, or 20?  I'm afraid the older ones would not be of much use to me.
