I think there was some confusion here -- JumpStart, at least the way I've
always seen it, is used to boot a diskfull client for software
installs(multiple clients, in most cases). net booting is similar, but
designed for diskless clients. A net booting server will have tftp, rarpd
and /export/root and /export/swap partitions as well as kernel files
(images, I think Sun calls them) for various architectures.

Thanks.

I'd seen that stuff on docs.sun.com, but I couldn't figure out just how
much of it was necessary for a boot-only server. I could find stuff on
JumpStart and network installations, but nothing that covered the specific
"diskless workstation's boot server" case.

I could just install Solaris from the CD-ROM (once I threw a disk at the
LX) but I was thinking of making the LX a diskless workstation, and having
it boot from the IPX and have its directories there, too.

Setting up an "install server" doesn't seem the right thing to do in this
case. But, I could be wrong.

So, I not only need information on setting up the bootp server, but on how
to handle the directory mounting, NFS, etc.

All under Sol 7.

Now, it may be that this is just too much trouble to go to just to save a
little noise and heat in the office, and I'd be bogging down the LX by
making it use the little IPX as its file server. If my idea's a crock,
feel free to tell me so!

SunOS 4/Solaris 1 or SunOS 5/Solaris 2?

With Solaris 2.x it's very easy, look under the Advanced Installation
guide on docs.sun.com. In the Tools subdirectory of the OS CD there is a
program to setup the install server (called, oddly enough,
setup_install_server) and a program to add a client netboot entry
(add_install_client).

For SunOS 4 it's a bit more involved but covered well in the manuals.
