The device could have been an adaptation of the wire recorder, a German
invention used first in WWII sound recording -- a forerunner of the tape
recorder. Essentially, it used wire instead of tape.

Wire recorders came to the U.S. postwar. Just several days ago I
heard an excerpt of an interview with Clement Atlee (immediate postwar
prime minister of Great Britain) done on a wire recorder for CBS. To
splice, knot the tag ends of the wire and apply a lit cigarette end to
shooth out the bump.
