I think the source of the dislike is the same as the source of this thread.
Microsoft has chosen to unify the Operating System and interface across as
many devices as possible. For most people, their first exposure to Windows 8
is on a desktop or laptop PC where the interface is a little confusing and the
reasons for departure from existing windows conventions is unclear. This has
led many people to dislike Windows 8. Then they see the Surface Pro, a
machine designed from the ground up to run an Operation System they have
already decided they dont like. They are not evaluating the Surface Pro as a
bespoke device with software and hardware designed to work together.

I think that If Microsoft had decided to first design the surface as a bespoke
device bundled with a new interface, then after that device had gained
acceptance in the marketplace, integrate some of the concepts from it into the
desktop, there would be less dislike for the surface. (More along the lines
of how media center was an option on windows 7, but most desktops didnt use
it.) Instead, Microsoft forced the new interface across the board, even where
it wasnt a good fit, hoping that it would drive people to the hardware that
is a better fit for the software.

Personally, i think the Surface pro is a great device for its particular
niche, but less than optimal as a general purpose device. For my use, Id
rather have a better laptop and a more portable tablet than try to get both
into one device, but I can understand the appeal of the Surface Pro if it fits
your usage.
