To be fair the patent problem is a world-wide problem; the patent
system seems to have evolved out of the old practice of monarchs
granting monopolies to their favourites, thus perhaps the most damaging
aspect of patents ... the right to exclude others from using the
invention that is patented.

Perhaps if patent holders were required to license their patents for a
reasonable proportion of the final product's purchase price, it would
greatly decrease the amount of damage that patents cause. Especially
software patents :)
