What's your hardware? I run OS X on a 2012 quad-core Mini with a 256GB
internal SSD, three external USB 3.0 hard drives, and 16GB of RAM and find
it rather snappy. It multitasks better than my beefier PC (faster quad
core with a 128GB SSD, 2TB internal SATA with 64GB SSD dedicated cache,
16GB of RAM), which I think is due to kernel and driver architecture
differences. Both are running the latest OS. I have run Linux on the PC
in the past, and it was more responsive, but I understand your frustration
regarding drivers. Linux runs well on my netbook. I tried to use Linux
for an HTPC, but different issues with different distros frustrated me too
much. I looked at BSD, but lack of drivers was an issue.

Not that I can think of. If you haven't upgraded to an SSD in your Mac,
it's the #1 upgrade I recommend, followed by at least 16GB of RAM.
