[geeks] Cheap/reliable backup?

Is there a cheap/reliable way to backup data from a disk? I don't usually
hear about the latest tech stuff for a decade or so but it seems to me the
only thing people are doing to backup their data is mirroring it (not
exactly a backup but good if one disk suddenly fails) or copying to another
drive. The disk is still the weakest link.
Is there a long term backup strategy given drives are so big now or is
everybody just using RAID and never really backing anything up anymore?
Blue Ray looked promising at the time but given it takes what, 10 of them to
backup a now-measly 500G drive, it doesn't seem practical.
Thanks for your comments and ideas and especially any war stories about this
or that method being better because...
