I would submit that any technology that is predicted to 'die' never 
will.  No journalist ever writes to predict the death of a technology 
that obviously will die, they only predict the death of something 
shocking (facebook?  laptop computers?).  These predictions are almost 
always wrong, but they get the attention of everyone who uses the 
technology, which results in people reading the article, which results 
in ad revenue, which results in income for the writer or their 
publisher.  Somehow, it pays to be wrong.
