It was born at an awkward moment. The LCD iMac (lampstand type) was expensive,
and not that kid-safe. CRTs were still marginally cheaper to have made. They
had to pack a G4 computer into a better CRT than the old G3 iMac with a flat
screen. It ended up as a rather nasty iMac G3 ++++.

I agree though, the design is over complicated and just plain crappy to
service.
