Replying to myself because I think i found my answer.  It sounds like 
it's the X-Fi MB 
(http://www.creative.com/oem/products/software/x-fimb.asp)  which to me 
sounds like it's some useless crap.  I think I'll look at USB DAC's and 
go that route instead.
