until only a decade ago or so, caddy used to boast they could sell
anything and everything they made, just because they were caddy.
charge $20 for a part that's $10 at chevy? yup.

" Yup. GM's structure is utterly irrational. They should have dropped
" half their marques decades ago and kept just three brands, four at most:
"
" GMC - ALL the trucks, and ONLY trucks. No other division may sell
" trucks, and that includes SUVs. The whole idea of a Cadillac SUV is
" de-facto farcical.
also a little oxymoronic, not to mention just plain moronic.
gm has always been famous for its rather ivory-tower mgmt and internal
politics. i think it's significant that when they can pontiac, the
'halo' models built by gm au and not shared will go too instead of
being rebranded. seems like they're being a little hasty,
superficial, and shallow in their thought process, like obama just
gave them a massive dope slap and they suddenly woke up and realized
oh #### we're in trouble...
item: the gm mgr of chinese ops, a fast-rising star in his late 40s,
was fired basically for doing the job they sent him to do, -too-well-.
among other things he got the chinese partner to provide worker health
care by showing it would save money overall. this in the '90s iirc.
and the gm of today is only a shadow of what it was in the '80s.
they've been burning the furniture to heat their house. delphi
systems... electro motive is a corporation again, after 6 decades as
a division. i hear penske is bidding for saturn; they bought detroit
diesel years ago.
" Yup. Utterly stupid. Nothing but brand dilution and pointless
" duplication for the sake of duplication. Hey - you're branches of the
" same company, you should COMPLEMENT each other's products, WTF are you
" doing trying to COMPETE against each other?!?
back when brand dealers were separate, it made sense for each to have
access to a full line. modern superdealers make that irrelevant. and
as late as the '60s [that's a shockingly looong time ago now], brands
within gm still had their own factories and engineers; the same
platform could come out quite differently from them, not only in trim.
