However, to implement the "fair" tax, the federal government would need to
be involved with every single retail transaction. That would be more
unconstitutional regulation of intra-state commerce. To get around that,
they'd need to draft an amendment which would likely grant explicit
permission to regulate intra-state commerce[0]. Further centralization of
government power isn't something anyone not in power needs.
Not that Congress can even spell "constitution" these days.
[0] Likely for "terrorism" and/or "security" in addition to taxation.
