Yes NetBSD is nice but I only use it for serious work, not mediacenter/web
browsing, which is what I use Ubuntu for.

Unless his filesystem was encrypted, you could have booted off a Linux CD
and gone into a recovery console (often included on Linux install CDs
these days), mounted the filesystem and undone the damage he did. I'm not
sure an fsck was necessary.

OS X ships the same way out-of-the-box (until you manually enable the root

I wouldn't call it brain damage, I'd call it different than what other
systems do. Different tools for different jobs, and I can understand your
preference, but I don't think it's a reason to entirely dismiss a
distribution.
