We do have stout property taxes, but in the last 10 years most states have
caught up with us. We do it by keeping government lean and minimal. One
example: when the state cuts down a tree they harvest the wood and use it
to heat things like equipment repair depots and such. A government will
spend all the money it's given, so we don't give them much.
We also turn some expenses over to the people who create them in the form
of fees. Until recently each town was required to fund their own schools.
Someone took the state to court because they felt this was discriminatory
against rural and poor towns, so we're trying to figure out how to comply
with the court ruling to make things more even.
This environment is why the Libertarian free-staters chose NH as their
beachhead.
