I never gave it to them, and bought a lot of stuff from them.

Just refuse.  They want your money, they do it your way.

Service Merchandise used to do that.  If you refused, they would say  
you had no warranty or could not return items.

I pointed out to the manager at the local store that what she was  
saying was basically illegaly, first of all, and secondly that none of  
that required my personal information, just my receipt.

She very quickly backpedaled, but the customers around me had already  
heard, and I stood there gleefully as each one of them also refused to  
give any information, and took home their warranties and full receipts.
