They do seem to exist. The only one I found is the Zoom 5001, though.

It seems to be based off the DEC Tulip, so I wonder if it would work in
other OSes (BSD, Solaris x86, etc.)

It will do 42Mbps down, which I think is the max most cable providers will
do. One friend of mine in the know from the Cable HW side of things told me
it was only DOCSIS 1.1 and not 1.2, but I'm not sure what that means.

I currently have a Motorola Surfboard 900 SBG (all-in-one WAP+Cable Modem)
which is nice and extremely solid, but I can't really get into it and hack
around.
