That day was November 2nd, 1976.  I wasn't born yet, so i didn't hear 
the howls, can anyone else comment about how loud they were?  Granted, 
California's 45 electoral votes that year weren't enough to make Ford 
win the election, he lost to Carter.

California went to the Republican candidate for 6 consecutive elections, 
1968-1988.
