    There are some tasks where ability to run many processes (by
having many of these in a 2U/1U rackmount) and bandwidth is more
important than raw computing power.

    You could use something like MPI or (if you dare run JVM on it)
Hadoop to split up the tasks. 

    This should also more than suffice for a small farm of load
balanced machine serving static (or light dynamic) content or doing
mail.

    As power consumption won't be too high your colo bill may not
even peak much higher than the power usage of a few 1U/2U machines
either.. interesting idea :-)
