not to mention the energy and ecological costs of making the zev and
disposing of your old car.  the fed epa did a study which concluded
teh greenest thing you can do is maintain your present car and keep it
on the roads as long as possible.

sidelight: we could use a recycling law like germany's.  mfrs are
required to dispose of their products when discarded, and all
packaging.  right away, big gaudy mostly-empty boxes disappeared from
pharmacy shelves, and if you take a german car apart you'll find every
speck of plastic marked with the appropriate recycling logo.

contrast that with the az [iirc] power co that lobbied for a crusher
bill so they wouldn't have to clean their own emissions, then after it
was passed - oh btw they also needed a landfill permit; only 1/2 the
avg american car is recyclable...
