Call me an anti-nerd if you will, but this is why I preach at the high  
altar of pre-compiled binaries. Over the years I've come to greatly  
appreciate the huge effort that pre-comp libraries take to maintain  
and setup (for the very reasons you outlined), especially for non-GNU  
OSs.

I appreciate some people get a kick out of compiling and goofing  
around and I understand and sympathise that it shouldn't be as hard as  
it is, but this person just likes crap that works, and so just  
downloads a binary where available (and they are, for a huge range of  
OSs, these days).

Just my 2 pence worth
