It was actually originally "Catch-18" and was changed because Leon
Uris' "Mila 18" had been recently released.

Wikipedia has a bit on it (though it's not my/the original source on
the name change):  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catch-22

and they do mention not renaming it to "Catch-17" because of "Stalag
17" which I hadn't heard before.
