I personally know quite a few people who were doing fine, and thought
they were financially secure, until their job sector crashed, and have
been hanging on by their fingernails ever since. (I say "job sector"
because I'm not just talking about the dot-com bubble.) And then
there's people who thought they had plenty of savings to tide them over
tough times, until their S&L turned around and said, "Oh, sorry, we lost
your money. Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out."
