You've got it backwards - I want them to poll for email, rather than have my computer/fax modem call them on their one line and have the phone ring at odd hours (FAX is a push model, I want to implement a pull model).

But the point is valid - to a certain extent, that is what I am talking about, but I want a reasonably high resolution color photo printer on the other end, and I don't want their phone to ring - I want the modem line in my basement to be the only thing that rings...

While alternate platforms will address the "crapification" factor, the other issue was their fear of breaking a computer. The iOpener was able to be turned off if it got stuck and nothing got broken - it was an appliance, not a "computer" in the common sense of the term. Also, honestly, anything beyond a kiosk is too much for them to handle (these dogs are too old to learn any new tricks ;^)

I was going to send them a Mini, but then they got a WebTV, but even that doesn't get turned on - what I want is a "magic photo/email printer" that only needs occasional paper and ink replacement.
