For pure throughput tests something like ttcp.c from SGI is a more
appropriate tool.

Is your cabling GBit/s ready, at lest good Cat-5(e)? Connectors? Patch
panel?

BTW: AFAIK GBit/s Ethernet does Auto MDI/MDIX, so you don't need cross
over cables.
