I don't know what they are doing now, but they were selling the latest
version and putting out an old version for FTP.

There are three versions of the WRT54G. The original which ran a version
of Linux and the new version which runs a program developed under VxWorks,
which is much faster and runs in half the RAM (and the routers that
run it come with half the RAM as the original).
So many people complained about not being able to buy the old version
anymore Linksys came out with the WRT54G-L which is similar to the
original version. It will run Linux firmware, if it does not already
come with it.
Sammy Ominsky (who is probaby asleep now) runs a version of Linux called
"tomato" on his. He's very happy with it.

That requires RAM. I don't know if you can change it without reducing
something else.
