aha! there's the mileage diff - the renaults were only available with
the ax5 stick. i don't know what their axle was.

hmmm... that would be part of the smoothness campaign - get the pilot
injection to light off, then the main slug burns smoothly instead of
detonating with the cliche diesel rattle. undoubtedly a lot easier on
the engine too.
