[geeks] Forwarded router question

"I now have three computers I want to connect.  I am perturbed enough
with the DLink router I have to want a much nicer one.  I want the
ability to forward ports, VPN etc.  What would be a good one?  I may be
interested in just running a PC in the future but for now a
semi-flexible appliance solution would be what I'm after now."

I believe this question was discussed not too long back, but not from
the perspective of "I want it to be an appliance".  Anyone have any
advice regarding an off-the-shelf appliance to do what he wants, or are
they all going to be pretty much lowest-common-denominator consumer devices?
