As a general rule, countries with high GDP tend to have a population
with a high disposable/discretionary income. This is modified by how
equally the income is distributed of course ... so China has a
relatively small market for such things (although becoming an
established name in China could well work out to be a very good long
term strategy given the way that China is growing). 

Given that the US tends to be less interested in encouraging equalising
the income of its people than countries in Europe, you could well find
that the European market is actually larger!

Of course Europeans would also insist on localisation, so the US is
definitely the biggest English language market.

Now for some figures on something specific ... Sony's PS2. This sold
7.84 million units in 2004 with 3 million units sold in the US. So the
US market for PS2s is 38% of the total (less that 50%). Only one product
of course and I suspect the shares vary widely.
