and pennsylvania!  i heard about that - it had to do with an
ill-conceived attempt by the federal govt to tax alcohol production,
and by capacity rather than output, which favored large commercial
enterprises rather than home brewers.  the whole antagonism to
'revenooers' started then, and in the disastrous aftermath many of the
former northeasterners moved to the southern appalachians.

this was in the early years of the 19th c and the gov was still trying
to pay the revolution debt off.
