It's the old people don't want you when no one else does thing. There
was a CSI Miami episode about a company that provided (for a fee) a
woman to go out with you, and act like an old collge chum.

The logic was if you had a woman friend who knew you for a long time and
vouch for you, you must be ok.

I thought it was made up, I found out later there really are companies
that do it.
