The ADB on some of Apple's monitors was used to communicate with them, so
that you could adjust the monitor completely from software, rather than
have a menu system built into the monitor.
The real reason ADB was retained as a port on desktops up until the first
model G4 was that a lot of high-end prepress and other A/V software still
used ADB hardware dongles.
BTW, it's a little-known fact that up until the Intel based MacBooks came
out, all the keyboards in Apple's portables were still ADB-based.
