There's two schools of thought with electric bikes. The "assist" method
where you still pedal on hills and such, and the true electric bike. The
electric bike would by nature be heavy due to batteries and enough motor
to relieve the rider of all effort.

The assist systems are much lighter.

Both methods are available as manufactured/tested systems or kits. The
assist systems are available as add-ons to standard bikes.

A friend gutted a smaller street-type motorcycle and converted it to
electric many years ago. The Cambridge Massachusetts Police asked him to
stop using it because it was too quiet and pedestrians might walk out in
front of him.
