[geeks] 64-bit apps vs. 32-bit apps

I.m in the process of building a new mailserver (Solaris 10, Ultra 10 300MHz ,
512MB memory) to replace my old server (an Ultra 1 170MHz) for the house and I
noticed that while the Solaris kernel is 64-bit, almost all of the binaries in
the OS are 32-bit. I've just finished building OpenSSH as a 64-bit app (to
replace the Sun SSH) just for kicks and I'm now working on building BIND 9.3.3.
Can anyone out there answer whether it's better to use a 32-bit app on a 64-bit
machine or a 64-bit app? I've read an article that said that MySQL performance
as a 64-bit app is actually worse than the 32-bit version. Any thoughts?
