Don't know about SPARCs, but PPC OFW machines can load regular ELF
images via "boot net".
Hmmm?
$ file /tftpboot/ofwboot.* /tftpboot/boot.net.sparc
/tftpboot/ofwboot.elf: ELF 32-bit MSB executable, PowerPC or cisco 4500,
version 1 (SYSV), statically linked, stripped
/tftpboot/ofwboot.sparc: ELF 32-bit MSB executable, SPARC32PLUS, V8+
Required, version 1 (SYSV), statically linked, not stripped
/tftpboot/boot.net.sparc: sparc executable
So at least newer SPARC (sun4m?) OFW can load ELF too.
