Naw, just put the good stuff on the bottom of the bag, not near the top/edges ;^)
I've had good luck with baggage in my limited exp. flying, and checking the bags only costs me about 20-30 minutes on the other end of my trip to pick up my bag. I always get a good laugh at the fellows that bring a rolling suitcase, a shoulder bag and laptop bag on the plane, nad try and balance their "SBARRO" pizza slice/baked car hood pizza on the plane ;^)
If you are really concerned about your bags, gate check them - that way they are the last thing on the plane (and first off), are waiting for you at the gate when you get off the plane (maybe, or they will show up in baggage claim), and will provide the baggage/TSA folks the minimum amount of time to "inspect" it. Just a thought.
