It isn't.  Seperate channels can be sent on seperate sidebands.  The receiver would be a pain though.  And I believe there is an upper frequency limit on the audio so it would fit in the assigned channel.  That and the lack of atmospheric noise immunity (like FM has) did not make it popular.
