I learned that line from some Vietnam movie, it was a reference to an ARVN
rifle and it took a moment for its meaning to sink in - then it was funny as
hell.

As for Italy in WW-II, my understanding from some men who were the first on
her shores in that war is that the population wasn't behind the government's
plans at all. They mostly threw down their weapons and kissed the Americans.
My Wife's dad was in Italy so early that he saw Musolini's body swinging
from a rope in the town square.
