I question his commitment, based on this line:

"When he realized that he was unable to nail his other hand to the board, he called 911," Boucher said.

Unless he called 911 to get someone to drive the final nail, he should have stayed and bleed to death (is he in a hurry?)...

BTW - I believe the quote from The Young Ones was "I tried it, but it's no good - you can't drive the third nail"...
