I know that supposedly if you connect a usb keyboard and mouse to a closed
powerbook that it will then be awake.  (This may also require an external
monitor plug, not sure).

If that is not an option, then there is always this page, which talks
about messing with the kernel to prevent sleep on lid closure:

I haven't tried that kernel patch, nor can I endorse it in any way.
