Hmm ... they obviously teach driving differently in the US.

Over here an emergency stop is a perfectly acceptable move, and drivers
behind are supposed to keep enough distance that they can make a stop in
time (even if some vehicles stop quicker than others). Of course many
don't, and end up being statistics in the next fog pile-up.

Stopping for a 'tree-rat' might be excessive, but an emergency stop
might be necessary at any time so a bit of unnecessary practice
shouldn't cause any harm if the drivers behing behave as if an emergancy
stop might be necessary at any time.
