I took a driving course when I hit 12 points on my license (I had a
knack for just missing the 12 month good driving point reduction mark
by getting a ticket every 11 months for a few years... Anyway, I didn't
know it but it seems that by going to the course (to avoid 6 months
suspension), I put myself in a position whereby if I got another ticket
in the 12 months following the class, I not only got the
points/fine/suspension of the offense, but also an added suspension
period, and the pont reduction for the class added back to my record.

They said their reserach showed that if a "chronic offender" could
break the cycle of offenses for 12 months, they could go years without
a ticket.

I think they call it scared straight.

It worked, no tickets in the last 8 years (since the class).
