[geeks] Tape hiss

Hi,
I have been posed a problem to show off my SGI's to my friends. They 
have a bunch of old tapes they want to convert to mp3, however we'd be 
interested 'cleaning up' the sound a little. I'm currently searching the 
web and reading about the denoising of audio using lifted interpolated 
wavelets ( a final project from Winter 1996 term at Dartmouth College) 
but I'd thought I'd ask here in the mean time if anyone had any suggestions.

It doesn't have to IRIX specific. Linux would work for me to - really 
just trying to avoid crapy hacked copies of soundforge on windblows.
