When I install OO i usually do ./setup -net as root, and install it in 
/usr/OpenOffice, then as my normal login I do 
/usr/OpenOffice/program/setup which then uses very little space in my 
home dir while leaving the program files available for any other users 
to also use. (Not that I have lots of users, but I try to admin my 
machines as if I did) :)
