Don't feel like a schmuck - it is a bit obscure.

On VMS system the Epoch time is set to 00:00:00 on November the 17, 1858 (or 1858-NOV-17 in VMS format). This is the base date of the U.S. Naval Observatory's ephemerides (google will give the details, but basically it is a reasonably unique astronomical conjunction).

On a Mac system, the Epoch time used to be 00:00:00 on January 1st 1904. I don't know if this is still true for the BSD-derived OS X.
