My experience contradicts yours.

Linux can be a pretty good OS for games. K, most games are windows stuff, 
but there is no problem if the ones you like are accidentally the ones who 
are ported to a real OS.

Besides, a good video card can be "handy" if you use the gimp or blender a 
lot. Given you ran a PC, would you run Blender under windows or under 
linux?
