Yes.  I have a Cold Steel tanto.  A roommate and I once used it like
an axe to chop through a 2-inch-thick dowel several times.  (We were bored.)
I didn't try slicing a tomato afterwards, but it was still sharp.  It
holds an edge fairly well and is comfortable to hold.  The handle is 
rubber coated.  (I don't know if they all are)
